THE KANYE WEST AWARDS

last night, kanye west stormed the stage at the grammy awards to protest beck’s win for album of the year.  he was later quoted as saying beck should “respect artistry and give his award to beyonce.”

now, i’m not going to say beyonce’s album is good or bad.  i’m not going to diminish it’s artistic merit or anything….but let’s be real for a second.

beyonce’s self titled album had 24 credited writers.  24.  the song “drunk in love” by itself had 9.  from what i can tell, it’s a song about masturbating in the bath tub, with a sexually charged music video that features a sexy lady rolling around on the beach like she just took ecstasy.  there’s also a song about how curling your hair is a pain in the ass.

beck’s “morning phase,” by comparison, has one writer.  beck. for all tracks.  he also did the orchestral arrangements.  on it, you can also hear a variety of instruments being played by beck….including vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, keyboards, piano, orgam, synthesizer, electric bass, tambourine, ukelalie, charango, celeste, dulcimer (those last 3 i;ve never even heard of) harmonica, glockenspiel.  now i tell you this…..and just consider the gall of a dude telling this guy he needs to appreciate beyonce’s artistry.  consider that.

“hey, multi-instrumentalist with a 20 year track record of delivering album after album of consistantly great music in a variety of styles….you’re not my friend. beyonce is. and i’m a genius.  an entire panel of judges has determined that your album was the best this year, and although that is really kind of a subjective thing and music means different things to different people, i’m so passionate about it that i’m going to get up on the stage and look like a fucking retard in front of all of my peers to protest it.”

if that sounds stupid, you should hear the actual quote……..

“I just know that the Grammys, if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We ain’t gonna play with them no more. And Beck needs to respect artistry and he should’ve given his award to Beyoncé.

“Because when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in their face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration, and we as musicians have to inspire people who go to work every day, and they listen to that Beyoncé album and they feel like it takes them to another place.”

jesus.
